Cedar Street House

Addition and Remodel
Berkeley, CA

The existing one story 1070 sf house had a side entry, two bedrooms and one bath. Typical of small, older Berkeley homes, it didn’t lend itself to the more informal life people now enjoy, nor did it connect well to the outside.

My clients, with 2 growing children, wanted a larger more gracious house with an inviting front porch, real entry space , 3 bedrooms, a guest room/home office, larger kitchen and good connection to the rear yard.

The solution: From the new front porch you now enter into a spacious entry- formerly the dining room. The entry looks into the living room through the existing arched doorway. Picking up on that arch the new entries into the “public” spaces are all arched. From the entry vestibule you can also see into the kitchen and beyond into the dining room with its large sliding door which opens onto the backyard. The stair to the second floor is tucked in behind the living room. A cozy reading nook fits in perfectly under the stairs. The second story has a master suite and two bedrooms and bathroom for the kids.
