Lake Merritt House

Remodel
Oakland, CA

When this family of four moved into their new Tudor inspired house it was almost perfect. The kitchen was worn and obsolete, the basement too low to be a living space, and the master closet too small for two.  The enclosed basement stair cramped the kitchen. Removing the wall we uncovered the old open stair railing that is now a feature and the breakfast nook airier with enlarged windows better connected to the backyard. The light filled, eat-in kitchen with the built in desk is now the favorite homework spot and where the family does most of its living. One bedroom got a little smaller so the master closet could get larger and the master bath was redone. The basement floor was lowered enough to make it legal living space. with french doors out to the backyard the stair naturally divided the space in two, a guest room with full bathroom and a project space. To make use of all possible space we built a laundry closet into the crawlspace above a short retaining wall where clothes can be loaded completely at counter height.
